Brief Introduction
A BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO THE DAFL (Department of Applied Foreign Languages): I. Development Directions and Characteristics: Due to booming Asian economies, Taiwan has held a very important position in the international trade arena, so our department is exclusively designed to foster innovation and practical application of foreign language professionals. In response to this trend, Technology and Science Institute of Northern Taiwan established the department of applied foreign languages (emphasis on English) in August of 1996. The curriculum focuses on training students with the four basic language skills: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. In addition, computer and business skills are also added to sharpen the students’ competitiveness in the job market. After the institute upgraded and renamed Taipei Chengshih University of Science and Technology on December 25th, 2011, the foreign language department targets the cultivation of foreign language professionals in business and tourism.
II. The Direction and Planning of the Department: As International Global Village has gradually formed, English language is one of the most important skills that people need to acquire today. English proficiency is not only to promote global economic development, but also to enhance interpersonal communication, to accelerate the realization of the dream of a global village. Taiwan's hi-tech products are popular worldwide. As a result, a great number of foreign language professionals are urgently needed to be cultivated. The main objective of setting up the foreign language department is cultivating English and Japanese language professionals with practical experiences. Thus, enhance industries’ international reputation and competitiveness. The Applied Foreign Languages Department upholds the school’s "student-centered" education philosophy, orients "student achievement" teaching approaches, cultivates pragmatic practical professionals needed by all industries. It also practices “pragmatic teaching”, emphasizes innovation, creates pleasant learning environment, integrates into the local communities and broadens the horizons, combines foreign language skills with dedicated attitudes, nurtures professionals with humanities. As citizens of the global village, our department fosters students with international vision, liberal arts and humanities, fluency of foreign languages. With a perfect combination of domestic industries and integrate into the local communities. Cultivating language professionals for business and tourism, career-oriented training right after graduation, strengthening the adaptation of workplaces for students, in line with the current development of local industries and future manpower needs.
III. Achievements: Since the establishment of the department, students actively participate in all kinds of intramural and national competitions regarding English and Japanese language proficiency, such as stage play, Karaoke, impromptu speech, recitation, dubbing, etc. Through competitions, students learn the basic skills of their targeted languages: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. With the fluency of foreign languages, the knowledge of business and computer, the students will definitely become sought-after and competitive in the job market.
IV. Actual Achievements: 1. English drama performance is held annually 2. TESOL-related courses are provided, and internship opportunities are offered through the cooperation with the local kindergartens, elementary schools, junior high schools, and even language cram schools. 3. In 2002, (D group and other groups) placed 1st, 2nd, and Excellent Performance Awards, Thematic Creating Contests, held by National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, sponsored by the Regional Industrial Cooperation Center of the Ministry of Education 4. In 2003, 4 students’ works are accepted and published, 5th DAFL Seminar, held by the Oriental Institute of Technology 5. In 2003, 5 articles written by the students are published in Taipei Times 6. In 2004, entered the final competition, Northern Taiwan College Impromptu English Speech Contest 7. In 2006, selected candidates, Comprehensive English Contest, held by the Ministry of Education 8 In 2006, selected candidates, Telling Jokes in English Competition, held by the Ministry of Education 9. In 2006, selected candidates and the Best Performance Award, English Songs Singing Contest, held by the Ministry of Education 10. In 2006, placed 3rd for the Group Contest, 3rd , 5th , and 10th for the best dubbing artists, English Dubbing Contest, held by the Ministry of Education 11 held study tours to Japan and the United States 12 Certification promoted, encourage students to get certificates, such as English typing, computer software (level C), computer web design, GEPT, college English proficiency tests, TOEIC, Japanese proficiency test, etc. 13. V. Faculty and Facilities: All members of the faculty are qualified, outstanding, experienced, enthusiastic, and specialized professionals. Cutting-edge Language learning facilities are provided, such as multi-functional language lab, multipurpose student self-study center, computerized multimedia language lab I, computerized multimedia language lab II, etc. They are a definite plus to the learning environment.
VI. Prospects: Education: graduates can participate in the two-year science and technology selection test, registration and distribution, college transferring test, or even pursue postgraduate degrees either domestically or abroad. Employment: American English teachers, foreign enterprise workers, tourist and culinary workers, international trading company workers, editors and translators, interpreters, etc.
